Destroy a Vault Robot Upgrades Guide

How robot upgrades work in Destroy a Vault: what upgrading does to damage and income, and how the DPS curve scales into stronger vaults.

What upgrading robots does

The official game loop says it plainly: “Upgrade your robots and expand your base.” Upgrading takes Cash — the currency you get from smelting Gold — and converts it directly into a stronger robot. More damage per robot means faster vault cracks, bigger Gold payouts, and a higher offline earning rate from the same army. Unlike rolling, upgrading never misses: you always get exactly the damage you paid for.

How big do upgrades get?

The game’s own promotional art answers with an image: the same tank rendered three times, climbing from 10 DPS to 5K DPS to 1M DPS, the final form wrapped in red lightning. That is marketing scale, not a promised milestone table — but it tells you the shape of the curve: exponential, with late upgrades worth thousands of early ones. In-game values always apply; the takeaway is that upgrade progress compounds across a whole session arc, not just the first hour.

Upgrade priority: where your Cash goes first

Cash is finite and every system wants it — rolls, upgrades, base expansion, vault tiers. A priority order that works at nearly every stage:

  1. Your top damage robot first. The strongest robot cracks vaults fastest; upgrades on your best attacker raise your whole income ceiling immediately.
  2. Fill the roster before gilding one unit. A second and third deployed robot (see army building) usually out-earn stacking upgrades on a single hero unit early on.
  3. Upgrade in bursts after income jumps. Right after a vault tier unlock or a big rare pull is when upgrades pay back fastest.
  4. Rebalance after lucky rolls. A new rare robot can become your top attacker — redirect upgrade spend toward the new ceiling instead of the old one.

Upgrades versus rolling, the short version

  • Upgrades = guaranteed, immediate, incremental. Buy them when you need income now.
  • Rolls = variable, occasional jackpot. Buy them when your income is already steady and you are chasing the rarity ceiling.
  • Neither is wrong; the mistake is hoarding Cash while your army idles below its potential.

Upgrades and the vault ladder

Damage is only useful against something worth cracking. Every major upgrade threshold should ask the question: does this let me take the next vault tier? Stronger vaults pay more per crack — the official loop’s “unlock stronger vaults for bigger rewards” — so the real value of an upgrade is measured in the vault it unlocks, not the DPS number alone. When your current vault melts instantly, that is your cue to check the vault tiers guide and climb.

Session checklist

  • End-of-session Cash goes into upgrades, not the bank — unspent Cash earns nothing
  • Deploy before you upgrade, upgrade before you roll (early game)
  • After the BOSSES update, check whether boss vaults changed your damage targets — see the boss vault raids guide
